The sentinel of the Reserve
Built in 1595 by Florentine architect Camillo Camilliani, San Giovanni Tower stands on the western slope of Mount Cofano, within the Mount Cofano Nature Reserve.
This tower, along with the Tonnara di Cofano Tower, was part of a coastal lookout system designed to protect Sicily from pirate incursions between the 15th and 16th centuries. Its strategic position allowed it to watch over the entire Gulf of Bonagia and communicate quickly with other coastal towers, such as Isulidda Tower to the northeast and the Tonnara di Bonagia Tower to the southwest, using signal fires and other methods.
The tower has a square-plan structure, with sturdy walls built from local stone to withstand enemy attacks. It does not have a traditional ground-level entrance: access was granted via a retractable ladder leading to an opening above ground level, which ensured greater security in case of a siege. Inside, the tower was divided into multiple levels: the ground floor served as a storage area for supplies and ammunition, while the upper floor housed the sentries and the observation post.

San Giovanni Tower is not only an important historical testimony to Sicily’s Spanish-era coastal defences but also a key landmark for those wishing to immerse themselves in the untouched nature of the Mount Cofano Nature Reserve.

It is a must-see stop for visitors exploring the reserve. Trekking and hiking enthusiasts can reach it by following the coastal path that runs through Mount Cofano Reserve. Its privileged position offers visitors the opportunity to discover breathtaking landscapes, where the mountain meets the sea, creating scenes of rare beauty surrounded by the flora and fauna of the reserve.
Through the preservation and enhancement of sites such as San Giovanni Tower, the historical memory of the region is kept alive whist promoting sustainable and environmentally conscious tourism.
