the oldest in Europe
In the heart of western Sicily, in Custonaci, lies an important historical site: the oldest Islamic granary discovered in Italy. Situated on the promontory of Pizzo Monaco, bordering the municipality of Castellammare del Golfo, this archaeological site remained unknown even to local shepherds and farmers until 1982.
Since 2012, archaeological research conducted in the area has brought to light this ancient fortified communal granary, dating back to the period of Arab rule on the island, approximately a thousand years ago, between the 10th and 11th centuries.
The Aghadir (the traditional name for community granaries of the Islamic era) of Pizzo Monaco is a unique example of its kind in the western Mediterranean. These fortified granaries were used for storing food supplies and grain, serving as reserves for local communities in times of siege or famine. The structure, carved into limestone rock, consists of several chambers designed for crop preservation, protected by defensive walls ensuring its security. The Islamic granary of Custonaci is an unmissable stop for those interested in history, archaeology, and the natural landscape of Sicily. Its uniqueness and the atmosphere surrounding it make it a unique site, where the connection between the land and human craftsmanship is preserved.
