Unique in its kind
The Cofano Tonnara, located within the Mount Cofano Reserve, is a fascinating testament to Sicily’s long-standing tradition of tuna fishing. Its origins date back to before 1404, and it remained in operation until the late 19th century.

To protect the tonnara, the Cofano Tower, also known as “Torre del Tono”, was built. Constructed in the early 16th century, the tower features a square plan with a distinctive four-pointed star shape, a unique characteristic among towers of its kind in Sicily. Its concave walls were designed to deflect cannon fire from the sea, providing greater resistance against enemy attacks. In addition, each side of the tower contains a series of openings used to pour boiling liquids onto potential aggressors.
Today, Cofano Tonnara is an unmissable destination for history and nature enthusiasts. The recently restored tower hosts a photographic exhibition dedicated to Sicily’s defensive system of coastal towers (such as San Giovanni Tower), offering visitors an opportunity to immerse themselves into local history. The tower can be reached as the first stop along the coastal path that circles Mount Cofano, using the eastern entrance at the Gulf of Makari.
