Between panoramas and spirituality
The Portella del Cerriolo Suburban Park is a green space that offers visitors a unique experience in unspoiled nature and breathtaking views. This park extends across a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea, which allows visitors to admire one of the most stunning panoramas in western Sicily, spanning from Mount Cofano in the east to Mount Erice in the west, with its view embracing the entire Gulf of Bonagia.

The park’s strategic location makes it a natural link between the historic centre of Custonaci and the village of Scurati, famous for the Scurati Caves and the Mangiapane Cave. In the past, the internal path of the park was the only route connecting Custonaci to Mount Cofano and was used by pilgrims heading to the Chapel of the Crucifix, located at the foot of the mountain. The park’s vegetation is characterised by typical Mediterranean scrub, with a predominance of dwarf palm (locally called “giummarra”), euphorbia, and agave. Despite wildfires and attempts by criminals to destroy the park’s biodiversity, the local administration has ensured the survival of the area’s flora through periodic reforestation efforts. Within the park, there are coral trees, false peppers, turpentine trees, olive trees, Judas trees, carobs, stone pines, ficus, and smaller species such as oleanders, almond trees, cypresses, pomegranates, and mulberries all living alongside each other. Cerriolo Park continues to be a thriving, welcoming place thanks to the initiatives of active members of the community and devoted associations, helping visitors experience the beauty of nature at its most authentic.
Beyond its naturalistic value, Cerriolo Park also hosts artworks created by local sculptor Giuseppe Cortese, who has contributed to enriching the area with installations that harmoniously blend into the landscape, adding another point of interest for visitors. Among the most significant is the Statue of Regina Pacis, inaugurated in 2018, depicting the Virgin Mary in prayer. It is placed in a scenic location within the park, reachable via the path dotted with marble Stations of the Via Crucis.

The presence of the statue celebrates the deep bond between the territory and the Madonna, merging the park’s tranquil atmosphere with the local community’s spiritual aspirations. For those wishing to visit the park, it is easily accessible from the historic centre of Custonaci. Once there, visitors can walk along the path that crosses the green area, enjoying the panoramic views and immersing themselves in the peace of nature.
