Between heaven, earth and sea
The Oriented Nature Reserve of Mount Cofano is one of the natural treasures of western Sicily. Situated between San Vito Lo Capo and Custonaci, in the province of Trapani, this reserve spans approximately 537 hectares and offers breathtaking views of steep cliffs over the sea, trails immersed in Mediterranean scrub, and crystal-clear waters.

Mount Cofano is a limestone massif rising 659 metres above sea level. Its distinctive profile, reminiscent of a pyramid, stands out against the coastal landscape, creating a spectacular contrast between the rugged rock faces and the deep blue of the sea. The steep, often vertical cliff walls conceal caves and crevices that, in ancient times, served as the first sites of prehistoric human settlements. This promontory also held strategic importance in more recent history, helping to defend the Sicilian coast from pirate incursions. Watchtowers such as San Giovanni Tower and Tonnara Tower, dotted throughout the area, bear witness to its historical significance as well as its scenic beauty.
Today, the reserve is a true haven of biodiversity. The flora boasts over 300 typical species, including dwarf palm, ampelodesma, sea fennel, and various wild orchids. The fauna is equally rich—birds such as the peregrine falcon, common buzzard, and kestrel are frequently sighted, while mammals include wild rabbits, foxes, and porcupines. The waters surrounding the reserve are home to an extraordinary variety of fish and molluscs, making it an ideal destination for snorkelling enthusiasts. The biological diversity protected by Mount Cofano led to the reserve’s official establishment in 1997, ensuring the survival of the region’s rarest species.

For those eager to immerse themselves in its stunning landscapes, the Oriented Nature Reserve of Mount Cofano offers a variety of trekking routes, catering to both experienced hikers and those simply wishing to enjoy a walk in nature. The coastal path winds around the promontory along the shoreline, connecting Cornino Bay (western entrance) to Makari Gulf (eastern entrance). The ascent to the summit, starting from Piano Alastre, is ideal for more adventurous climbers, who will be rewarded with spectacular sea views upon reaching the peak. One of the most striking trails is the “Scaletta Maruzza,” which ascends the eastern side of the mount to Baglio Cofano, covering approximately 2 km along a route adorned with lush vegetation and ancient stone-paved paths.
The Oriented Nature Reserve of Mount Cofano is open all year round, although the best time to visit is between spring and autumn, when the climate is mild and nature is at its best.
