Marble and Cave Museum

Originally established in order to preserve and promote the culture surrounding marble quarrying, the museum was reopened to the public in 2013 on the occasion of the “Borghi dei Tesori Fest”. Its primary mission is to illustrate the evolution of the local marble industry, highlighting the significance of “Perlato di Sicilia,” a prized marble extracted from the Custonaci quarries. 

• Geology and Stratifications, featuring surveys, photographs, and samples to explore the region’s geological layers and complex rock formations.
• History of Extraction, displaying a collection of original work tools and photographic reports of the earliest active quarries, illustrating the development of quarrying techniques over the decades.
• Marble Exhibition, showing samples of different types of marble, including the renowned “Perlato di Sicilia,” allowing visitors to appreciate the varieties and unique characteristics of the materials sourced from the area.
• Speleology, with a dedicated section on local caves, complete with detailed maps and information on accessible caverns, providing an in-depth look at the region’s speleological heritage.

The museum is part of the “Network of Municipal Museums of Sicily,” an initiative promoted by ANCI Sicilia to enhance and promote the island’s museum heritage. This affiliation aligns with Custonaci’s strategy to highlight the cultural significance of its marble industry and geological context.
