The Living Nativity of Custonaci is one of the most evocative Christmas events in Sicily, set in the spectacular Mangiapane Cave, located in the district of Scurati. This event offers visitors an immersive experience into the rural Sicilian life of the late 19th century, faithfully recreating settings, trades, and traditions of the past.
During the Living Nativity, the perfectly preserved, ancient stone dwellings within and around the cave entrance come to life with animated figures and animals to realistically and evocatively recreate the atmosphere of a rural village.
During the guided tour organised for visitors, one can encounter artisans at work, including blacksmiths, carpenters, weavers, and bakers, engaged in traditional crafts using original tools of the time. In addition to these, there are housewives engaged in domestic chores and activities such as weaving, braiding agricultural products, as well as shepherds, innkeepers, and even bagpipe players and other musicians. Children and farm animals also contribute to making the village representation extremely faithful to scenes of life in ancient Sicily, reflected in the authenticity of both the surroundings and the costumes. At the end of the path, deep inside the cave, the Nativity scene is set up with a manger, live animals, and participants.
Every year, during the Christmas period, the cave comes to life thanks to the participation of over ahundred performers in period costumes. The nativity scene goes beyond depicting the Nativity; it offers a true historical reenactment with scenes of daily life typical of the 19th century.
The Living Nativity Scene is recognised as an intangible Sicilian heritage and attracts thousands of tourists annually from all over Italy and abroad.
